CIVIL
Who We Are

Built for the organizations doing the hardest work.

Civil exists because nonprofits and mission-driven enterprises deserve the same structural rigor the most durable institutions are built on, designed by the people inside them.

Our Story

Why Civil exists.

A strong strategy needs day-to-day operations to hold it up, and communications only land when they match how the organization works.

Midy Aponte-Vargas

Founder & CEO, Civil

Civil began with a conviction formed over two decades in public interest communications. Midy Aponte-Vargas spent her career helping nonprofits, foundations, and mission-driven enterprises advance hard public issues, and watched too many commitments turn into messaging exercises that served the institution’s image more than the work itself.

She founded Civil on that conviction. What started as a single practitioner’s answer to that gap has become a defined method, The CIVIL Framework™, applied across governance, finance, programs, and communications.

Funding is tightening, scrutiny is rising, and institutions are being asked to do more with structures built for a different era. Civil exists for that reality, joining strategic communications, disciplined operations, and a circle of senior advisors so the organizations it serves can endure on their own terms.

Built to Hold on the desk where it was written.
The Conditions

Structure shapes behavior.

1
1 The Moment

Organizations are asked to move faster and do more without changing how decisions are made or resourced.

Mandates grow, resources tighten, and today’s demands land on yesterday’s operating model.

2
2 The Strain

The result is strain, burnout, and tension. Not progress.

More process only deepens it. Misalignment is a structural problem, not a matter of effort.

3
3 If Nothing Changes

Pressure builds within outdated structures.

Decision-making slows. Trust erodes. Work stalls under pressure. The institution becomes more reactive than durable.

How We Respond

Build the structure the moment requires.

In response, Civil works in three moves, from reading the whole organization to building what it can run on after our work together ends.

Read the whole system

Every engagement starts by reading the whole organization, across governance, finance, programs, risk, and communications, so the work is grounded in how it operates.

Design with the people inside it

Systems are made of people. Civil designs with respect for the culture, history, and people inside each institution, drawing out the practices that will work for them.

Build what lasts

Civil moves past diagnosis into durable change: operating models organizations can run on after our work together ends.

Reach

A national practice, rooted in local ecosystems.

Civil is anchored on both coasts and works wherever the organization is, close to the ground where lasting change takes hold.

If your institution is carrying more than its structure was built for, we should talk. The work starts with a conversation, not a contract.
